Details

Helvetas Nepal’s Urban FutureScape Pilot / Hamro Sahar which was jointly conceptualized by Masters’s in Urban Studies Program of KU and Helvetas focuses on fostering sustainable and inclusive urbanization in two emerging towns of two municipalities through citizen participation in urban planning, adaptation to growing urban challenges, forecasting, and enhancement of urban services and uplifting the livelihoods of the urban poor and disadvantaged. As bigger cities across Nepal are rapidly urbanizing with problematic unplanned settlements and unplanned city development, small and intermediate emerging towns in peri-urban areas have the potential for spatial distribution of population and equitable urban development of the country. Improved urban management systems, access to adequate infrastructure and services, and increased opportunities in such budding urban regions can even contribute to minimizing migration to bigger cities, balanced development, and helping them realize their full potential. Incorporation of an integrated urban development approach in these towns can help the population maximize the benefits associated with urbanization. This pilot project is driven by the key objective of identifying critical urban issues and then administering interventions for improving the quality of life in the two emerging towns of Harion Municipality in Sarlahi District of Madhesh Province and Simta Rural Municipality in Surkhet District of Karnali Province.
